Mr. Jack's Birthday (must be 21+)
October 15th sees one of the most highly anticipated events in the annual music calendar as Mr Jack’s Birthday returns to Lynchburg, Tennessee for a very special and exclusive show to 250 people headlined by the multi-platinum selling, UK male success story of recent times that is Plan B.
Backed by The New Silver Cornet Band comprising a who’s who of US soul and named in honour of Jack Daniel’s original musical creation, The Silver Cornet Band, this unique collaboration will be one of the most sought after tickets of the year and is something even Plan B, after all the accolades for his ‘The Defamation Of Strickland Banks’ album, is looking forward to:
‘I’m really honoured to be deemed worthy enough of singing and working alongside such legendary musicians and songwriters at Mr Jack’s birthday in Tennessee this autumn.’
Joining Plan B for this very special and unique evening of entertainment will be a group on the cusp of greatness and a new artist set to make 2012 her own.
Warpaint are one of the most talked about new acts of the last two years with their debut album, ‘The Fool’ being acclaimed by The Sunday Times as ‘one of the debuts of the year’ on its release in 2010. Live shows have attracted similar breathless praise with NME declaring at a recent show ‘it’s not hard to know why we took our own vows of devotion to Warpaint not so long ago’. Joining us from the band to play with The New Silver Cornet Band, our very own star studded house band featuring members of Muscle Shoals and guitar legend Steve Cropper, will be vocalists Emily and Theresa.
Our opener this year maintains Jack Daniel’s commitment to new music demonstrated over the years as we welcome soon-to-be US hip hop sensation K.Flay to the bill. Bloggers Stateside have already been picking up on K.Flay’s reinvention of hip hop convention with the UK’s Dazed, always quick off the block, leading the charge over here praising her as a ‘musical whirlwind’. With a cover of The Zombies ‘Time Of The Season’ picking up views K.Flay is not your average rapper, blending her love of the obvious names with a respect for Fiona Apple and Liz Phair. She is all set to open the show with a bang
From the formation of the Silver Cornet Band to entertain the folk of Lynchburg and the surrounding area, Jack Daniel and the whiskeys that bear his name have been associated with music and Mr Jack’s Birthday continues that noble tradition in the very place where every drop of the family of Jack Daniel’s whiskeys are distilled to this day.
The history of Mr. Jack Newton Daniel, the man who gave his name to Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey, is surrounded by mystery. Whilst we know that he was born in September, no one knows the date or, indeed, the year. That is why, every year, the whole of the month of September is a celebration of the birthday of a man whose name, over 100 years since his birth, is instantly recognizable throughout the world. Having finished celebrating at the end of September, there’s one special day set aside for a final party in his honour every year.
Whilst our headliner, Plan B, is guest of honour for Mr Jack’s Birthday, our house band are also worth a mention. The New Silver Cornet Band was formed by band leader, Jon Tiven, Nashville producer of Alex Chilton and Frank Black amongst others. Joining Jon onstage this year are a host of legends. If their names aren’t familiar to you, then their pedigrees surely will be:
Steve Cropper – guitarist in Booker T And The MGs, and co-writer of ‘Knock On Wood’, ‘Dock Of The Bay’ and ‘In The Midnight Hour’. Steve is a musical legend and one of the most revered guitarists on the planet.
David Hood – Muscle Shoals bass player and the founder of the world famous Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, David has produced for and played with a plethora of famous names including The Rolling Stones, The Staple Singers, Cat Stevens and Paul Simon.
Craig Krampf – one of Bob Dylan’s first drummers. The majority of his notable credits are as a studio drummer. Since the 1970s, he has played on albums by other artists ranging from Steve Perry to Alabama to Kim Carnes to Flo and Eddie to Alice Cooper to Melissa Etheridge.
Billy Block – Frank Black’s drummer when not playing with the Pixies. Billy has played for music legends such as The Rev. Al Green, Pixies frontman Frank Black, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams.
Ben Tanner is a keyboardist and recording engineer from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He’s worked with recording artists such as Drive-By Truckers, Band of Horses, North Mississippi All-Stars, Bettye Lavette and Dylan LeBlanc as well as legendary Muscle Shoals session musicians Spooner Oldham, David Hood, and Jimmy Johnson.
